View from the Path

“View from the Path,” charcoal, graphite and pastel on paper, 24″x18″ unframed

Looking left from the Path to Meditation, there’s a sea of grasses that ends at the edge of the inlet, barrier island beyond. It’s particularly beautiful when the golden blooms are dancing in the sea breeze (see below). I started this last week in black and white, then realized color was called for. Pastel doesn’t usually agree with me, but I decided to call it finished today and took it in for framing since I need something more for a local show.

Just to say, Brad at Art & Frame is amazingly insightful. I’m comfortable calling a piece of artwork finished, but blind when it comes to mat colors and frame styles. Brad took one look, pulled a silver frame sample from the wall, and suggested a medium light-grey mat with thin purple accent to reflect the shadows and my signature at the bottom. I squinted at his choices, felt something click, and said a definitive yes. It’s like that nearly every time. He makes it easy for something that looks a bit funky and raw on the easel to come into it own when displayed. And he’s very supportive of artists.
