Little girls grow up. “Until Then” depicts a child’s desperate yearning for security and her grandfather’s embrace of her fleeting innocence, set against a backdrop of impending change. The moment I captured the source photo, I knew how fleeting the bond would be and felt compelled to memorialize it further in this charcoal & graphite drawing. Black & white seemed most appropriate for capturing the emotional depth.
The drawing has just been accepted into “Boundaries,” a juried show of North and South Carolina artists at nearby Sunset River Gallery in Calabash, N.C. I’m particularly pleased to have my work featured at this gallery, which is a favorite of mine, known for its diverse and engaging exhibitions showcasing local and regional talent. The show explores “the physical, emotional and conceptual limits that shape our lives,” delving into “themes of both connection and division, offering a poignant commentary on how we seek to both belong and stand apart. Where does one thing end and another begin? This show invites artists to explore the limits, edges, and intersections that define our lives, identities, and perceptions.”
Juried by N.C. abstract artist Lynn Golitz, I expect the show will be compelling. I’m looking forward to the opening reception at 2–4 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, and you are very welcome to join me! Artwork will be on display from then through May 31 at Sunset River Gallery, 10283 Beach Dr SW, Calabash, NC 28467. While you’re there, take some time to explore the gallery’s extensive collection of art forms, including pottery, jewelry, and mixed media.
